November 2020
Dr. Myeong-Lok Seol, Ph.D. Associate Scientist (USRA) was presented the 2021 Nanotechnology Early Career Award by the Nanotechnology Council of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He will receive the award at the ceremony during the IEEE Nano Conference in Montreal, Canada in the summer of 2021.
Dr. Seol was recognized for his contributions to the development of energy scavengers from motions and vibrations called tribo-electric generator (TEG) as well as supercapacitors for energy storage. In both cases, he has advanced printing technologies for the rapid prototyping and fabrication of these devices, sponsored by NASA's In Space Manufacturing (ISM) program. He has also advocated TEG for harvesting wind energy on Mars since conventional electromagnetic motors are too heavy to lift and propel to Mars. Dr. Seol has previously won the Future Technology Leader Award from the Engineer’s Council and Mike Sargent Career Achievement Award from the Institute of Engineering Technology in the United Kingdom for his research contributions in the last three years.
IEEE is the largest professional society in the world with over 360,000 members. The Early Career award is given annually to a young researcher within a few years of receiving his/her Ph.D. for innovative contributions as evidenced by high impact journal publications, patents and practical implementation.
