Aeronautics: NAMS Aeronautics Staff Contributed to the On-Time Delivery of Two Key NASA Milestones

October 2019

The Airspace Technology Demonstration (ATD)-2 project announced to the FAA and industry stakeholders the availability of its second technology transfer package on September 30th, 2019. ATD-2 is a multi-year research and development effort to improve the predictability and operational efficiency of the air traffic system in metroplex environments while maintaining or improving throughput by enhancing and integrating arrival, departure, and surface prediction, scheduling, and management systems.

The ATD-2 tech transfer consists of high-level project documents, knowledge and technology artifacts, technical publications, evaluation results, and summaries of informal tech transfers from both Phase 1 Baseline Integrated Arrival/Departure/Surface (IADS) and Phase 2 Fused IADS, which are primarily focused on pre-cursor research to enable success for FAA's Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM). There are more than 4000 pages of content and dozens of hours of videos in this deliverable. The full set of tech transfer artifacts developed under the ATD-2 project can be found here.

In addition, on September 30th, 2019 the ATD-3 project completed delivery of its final tech transfer to the FAA of Dynamic Routes for Arrivals in Weather (DRAW v2.0). DRAW is a trajectory-based system that combines the legacy Dynamic Weather Routes weather avoidance technology with an arrival-specific rerouting algorithm and arrival scheduler to improve traffic flows on weather-impacted arrival routes into major airports. This tech transfer builds on the Arrival Metering Operations from DRAW V1.0 and includes updates of the NASA DRAW technology implemented into FAA’s Time Based Flow Management (TBFM) 4.7 automation software and preliminary research into DRAW for Extended Metering Operations. The DRAW tech transfer package contains over 14 GB of outreach materials, high-level project documents, technical publications, DRAW technology artifacts, and simulation results.

NAMS staff from USRA, Crown, Acima, and Moffett Technologies contributed to these milestone deliverables.
