Paul Krois, Ph.D., Senior Consultant - Aviation Safety and Human Factors (Crown Consulting Inc.) was selected as a winner of a 2021 Ames Honor Award in recognition of his exceptional initiative and technical excellence in developing the concept of operations for the In-Time Aviation Safety Management System (IASMS) for the safe evolution of the National Airspace System (NAS).
The following is an excerpt from the Ames Honor Award nomination:
Dr. Krois has significantly contributed to the development of the Concept of Operations (ConOps) of an In-time Aviation Safety Management System (IASMS ConOps) that has been widely accepted by NASA executive leadership. The IASMS ConOps has been incorporated as a critical element of the NAS Vision 2035, Vision 2045 and AAM mission plans. The IASMS ConOps represents a significant reference for the industry at-large that outlines a transformation of existing SMS processes and systems essential to achieving the many operational visions in transformed NAS. Leveraging his extensive experience and network from his former career with the FAA, Paul helped the ConOps team integrate NASA concepts with FAA perspective and helped formulate and execute several successful industry workshops with little to no budget. Paul was an integral lead in collecting the data, interpreting various sets of input, and developing novel concepts that serve both near- and far-term aviation safety. Throughout the IASMS ConOps development effort, Paul authored and co-authored several conference papers to share the latest concepts. To this end, Dr. Krois’ efforts have helped shape not only the research portfolio of NASA’s SWS project, but the AAM mission technology roadmap as well. Without Dr. Krois’ involvement, this IASMS ConOps would not have been published as quickly, comprehensively or impactfully to industry at a time when it was needed most.
