The “AF Best Paper” is an award created by the Aviation Systems Division supervisory team to recognize the excellence of the Division’s work. All conference papers authored by both civil servants and contractors in Code AF between Aug 1 and July 31 each year are considered. This year’s winner is titled “Evaluation of a Dynamic Weather-Avoidance Rerouting Tool in Adjacent-Center Arrival Metering” authored by Miwa Hayashi, Doug Isaacson, and Huabin Tang of NASA. The paper describes a Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) simulation using the NASA Dynamic Reroutes for Arrivals in Weather (DRAW) decision support tool, examines how such a tool could reduce air traffic controller workload during periods of convective weather (thunderstorms), and presents the results of that simulation study. Several NAMS team members developed the DRAW software and contributed to the successful HITL: Steven Chan (Crown), Chuhan Lee (MTI), Rey Salcido (Crown), Kelly Schriner (Crown), Anthony Seo (USRA), and Wen-Ron Sheu (MSAG).
