Aeronautics: ATM-X UAM Team Receives NASA Honor Award

May 17. 2023

On May 17, 2023, the Strategic Conflict Management Simulation (X4) team from the Air Traffic Management eXploration (ATM-X) Project’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Sub-Project was recognized with a NASA Honor Award – Group Achievement Award. The UAM team led a year-long effort with seven industry partners (Collins, OneSky, SkyGrid, Metron, Unmanned Experts, Avision, and ANRA) to complete the first collaborative simulation of UAM operations with strategic conflict management. NAMS staff from USRA, Crown, and Moffett Technologies were part of the UAM team supporting the effort to identify, implement, and evaluate key technology requirements in the X4 simulation. The UAM team demonstrated a tremendous amount of collaboration and agility to gain consensus on technical scope and ensure that all partners successfully completed the simulation on schedule. The team often worked long hours on short notice to accommodate partner scheduling needs and to work around their schedule delays. The team demonstrated strong leadership, encouragement, and flexibility as they guided seven industry partners on an impactful exploration of a UAM system with strategic conflict management and learned many valuable technical lessons for improvement.

NAMS staff named on the NASA Honor Award include Leonard Bagasol (USRA), Jinn-Hwei Cheng (USRA), Stephen Chu (Crown), Saugata Guha (USRA), Huu Huynh (Crown), Chuhan Lee (MTI), Kushal Moolchandani (USRA), Tung Nguyen (Crown), Pat O’Neal (USRA), Mohamad Refai (Crown), Rey Salcido (Crown), and Punam Verma (USRA).
